BIO

Sensational and sensitive. Unconventional and emotional. Courageous and surprising.

Luxembourg pianist Cathy Krier is an artist driven by curiosity, openness and a desire to explore the many dimensions of musical expression. Equally at home in the classical repertoire and contemporary music, she creates programmes that transcend stylistic boundaries and reveal unexpected connections between musical eras, artistic disciplines and audiences.

Named an ECHO Rising Star for the 2015/2016 season, Cathy Krier has performed at some of Europe's most prestigious concert halls, including the Barbican Centre in London, BOZAR in Brussels, Philharmonie de Paris, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Musikverein Vienna, Cologne Philharmonie, Casa da Música in Porto, Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona and Philharmonie Luxembourg. Her performances have also taken her to the Konzerthaus Dortmund, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Müpa Budapest, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Konserthuset Stockholm, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, among many others.

A passionate advocate for contemporary music, Cathy Krier has collaborated with composers including Wolfgang Rihm, Konstantia Gourzi, Catherine Kontz and Denis Schuler. Her artistic curiosity extends beyond the traditional concert format into interdisciplinary projects combining music, dance, theatre and new approaches to musical communication. Highlights include Hear Eyes Move, a collaboration with choreographer Elisabeth Schilling exploring György Ligeti's piano études; Clara!, a musical journey for young audiences featuring music by Clara Schumann and Catherine Kontz; and Funeral Blues – The Missing Cabaret, directed by Olivier Fredj. She also explores the connections between music and well-being through her annual Yoga & Music at the Philharmonie Luxembourg.

Her recording projects reflect the same spirit of exploration. Her 2021 recording of György Ligeti's piano études received outstanding critical acclaim and was praised as a reference recording. In 2024, she released Piano Poems on the German label GENUIN, tracing the relationship between music and literature.

In 2022, Cathy Krier founded the Catch Music Festival in Luxembourg, bringing together emerging and established musicians in an atmosphere of artistic exchange and adventurous chamber music-making. Through her performances, recordings, festival and educational projects, she is committed to creating meaningful encounters with music and to fostering dialogue between tradition and innovation.

Born in Luxembourg, Cathy Krier began studying piano at the Luxembourg Conservatory at the age of five. At fourteen, she was admitted to Pavel Gililov's virtuosity class at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. She subsequently continued her studies with Andrea Lucchesini at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, receiving further artistic inspiration from Dominique Merlet, Robert Levin and Homero Francesch. At fifteen, she recorded Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto with the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Carlo Jans.

Since 2018, Cathy Krier has been professor of piano at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, where she lives with her family.
